Teach Your Baby to Sign
Signing with hearing babies and toddlers has become increasingly more popular in the past several years. It has been proven that babies as young as 6-9 months are able to communicate through sign language and thus have the ability to understand what is being said to them and have a way of expressing what they want. In turn, this reduces frustration for the child and parent/caregiver.
American Sign Language is a well established resource. No need to use made up signs when there are already signs available that are easy to use. Using ASL is a universal method of learning for pre-verbal babies and toddlers. Many preschools have adopted the use of signing for hearing and non-hearing children. If children are taught ASL they will be able to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing children that are now mainstream in the school system.
When you teach your baby signs you open the door to early communication, facilitated speech, and long-term learning. Signing with your baby increases communication and language skills. Signing with your baby increases IQ. Tests showed that a group of eight year olds who had used signing as infants scored an average 12 points higher IQ than their non-signing group. Signing with your baby decreases tantrums and frustration. Babies who sign can express themselves and be understood, this can greatly reduce the toddler tantrums. It also increases self confidence and self assurance by being able to express themselves and be understood.
