Signing For Babies
Learning to talk takes time and it requires motor skills that babies only begin to master around 12 months of age. But they do have the ability to understand and use language well before they can speak. Babies have a lot to say so sign with your baby!
Signing for babies also builds confidence, self-esteem, and social/emotional skills. Early and better communication will show many effective results, one of which is reducing or possibly avoiding unnecessary frustrations and tantrums!
The simplest activity like playing peek-a-boo or waving bye-bye plays a role in influencing baby's future physical, intellectual and social development.
First gestures may be to wave bye-bye or to point to an object. Fascination with their surroundings and intently watching your mouth are clues for your baby's desire to communicate.
Before you start, write down any gestures you and your baby are already using. Without realizing it there may be many nonverbal gestures, like: nodding head "yes" or "no", blowing kisses, lifting arms to be picked up, etc.
Babies are creative with using their own signs. Continue to use these signs and don't change them.
Babies learn gestures when they are taught through engaging interactive activities. Signs should be taught informally while eating, bathing, changing, or playing. Signing for babies should not be forced or pressured at any time.
Use as many opportunities as you can like feeding, bathing, cuddling to introduce new signs that will help your baby to learn. Promoting loving interaction strongly stimulates a baby's brain.
Don't worry about how many signs you use. It will be easier when you are comfortable using 2 to 4 signs at the beginning. Start with the easy signs. The most important thing to remember when introducing signs is that - Simple is Best and be Excited.
All babies learn at their own pace.
Remember choosing sign vocabulary that is motivating and useful will encourage faster learning.
