Learning to sign will open a whole new level of communication that is fun and useful.

Start with what motivates your baby.

6 - 9 months - MORE, EAT, MILK

10 + months - DOG, CAR, BEAR, BALL, BOOK, JUMP

Start by naming the things he/she sees and does.  If they point to "food" sign EAT and say "eat".  If he/she is bouncing/jumping say "jump" and sign JUMP, and so on.

You may have noticed that your baby loves to watch repetitive movement, like watching your ceiling fan.  You probably have even pointed to the fan and moved your finger around like the fan.  Well surprise!  You have taken the first step in baby signing and you probably didn't even realize it.  This is what I mean by making your simple daily tasks a natural occurrence and you have now turned it into an opportunity to learn sign language with your baby. WOW, my baby can sign!

Don't worry about how many signs you use.  It will be easier when you are comfortable using 2 to 4 signs at the beginning.  Start with the easy signs.  The most important thing to remember when introducing baby signs is that - Simple is Best and be Excited.

Babies 6 - 9 months are still learning their coordination and memory skills while babies 10+ months are at a further developmental stage.  Many things will influence how long it will take for your baby to sign.  The level of interest your baby has in wanting to sign will depend on how and when you teach a sign.  During fun activities while your baby is kept interested is easier and will be picked up more quickly.  Making the signing process as part of a routine is your best choice.

It may seem like a long wait until "my baby can sign" back to you, but the reward can be as exciting as watching them take their first steps or speak their first words.

Infants have a desire to communicate, why not use their natural gestures and develop a fun easy way of early communication with baby sign language.
